As a pending restricted free agent and the Montreal Canadiens‘ brightest young star, there has been plenty of noise surrounding Cole Caufield and his lack of a contract extension to date in recent weeks.
While the diminutive sniper has done his best to shut out the buzz, even he admits that isn’t always the easiest thing to do.
“I mean, you try not to (listen), but you really can’t get away from it,” Caufield said Friday afternoon of the increasing murmurs around his status. “It’s everywhere, you hear it a lot, but for me, it’s just about trying to stay away from it. It’s going to happen when it happens.”
With 36 points, including a team-high 26 goals, in 46 games this season, the former Wisconsin Badger looks to be in line for a significant pay raise this summer. Caufield, for his part, appears ready and willing to talk shop with Canadiens management on a deal, sharing that his experience in Montreal has been a positive one despite the team’s on-ice struggles.
“I love being here, I love this team and this group of guys,” the 22-year-old added. “So I just take it one step at a time. But for sure it’s in the back of my mind.”
Caulfield also rebutted concerns regarding what the holdup to date has been, and whether the term or the dollar figure has been the most pertinent sticking point.
“I don’t really see it like that, it’s about the best fit for me,” he said. “My agent (Pat Brisson) and the guys behind the scenes take care of those things, but I’m not too worried.”
