RED DEER, Alta. — Bruce Mouat and his Scottish squad are riding into the playoffs with an unblemished record at the Co-op Canadian Open.
Mouat, who already had a spot in the quarterfinals locked down, will carry a 4-0 record into the next round following a 7-5 extra-end win over Sweden’s Team Niklas Edin during Draw 13 Friday morning at Servus Arena.
The reigning Olympic champion Edin was eliminated with a 1-3 record.
Matt Dunstone is also moving on after his Winnipeg-based club qualified at 3-1 with a 7-5 victory against Team Danny Casper (1-3) of the United States.
Team Joël Retornaz of Italy brushed past Calgary’s Team Kevin Koe 8-2 in only five ends. Both teams remain in the mix for possible tiebreakers with 2-2 records.
Scotland’s Team James Craik also drew level to a 2-2 record and stayed in contention with a 6-1 win over Team Korey Dropkin (1-3) of the United States.

The Co-op Canadian Open is the fourth event of the Grand Slam of Curling season featuring 16 of the top men’s teams and 16 of the top women’s teams from around the world. … Round-robin play runs through to Friday evening with the best eight teams in both divisions advancing to Saturday’s quarterfinals. If necessary, a tiebreaker round will be played Saturday morning to determine the final playoff berths. … The semifinals are also on tap Saturday with both finals scheduled for Sunday.
