Samsonov to get start for Leafs vs. Blue Jackets, Giordano set to return

Ilya Samsonov will start for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday when they face the Columbus Blue Jackets, coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters on Thursday.

His most recent appearance ended in him getting yanked after allowing five goals on 19 shots through 28 minutes on Dec. 22 against the lowly Buffalo Sabres.

“It’s tough right now,” Samsonov told reporters after the game.

“I need to figure out everything in my head. It’s not about technique. It’s not about nothing. Just in the head.

“Just about mental spot.”

Samsonov is 5-2 with a 3.79 goals-against average and an .871 save percentage this season.

Also expected back in the lineup is defenceman Mark Giordano, who has missed 12 games since being sidelined Nov. 28 with a broken finger.

The 40-year-old Toronto native has one goal and four assists in 20 games this season.
