Lawes eliminates top-seed Gim in HearingLife Tour Challenge quarterfinals

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — Canada’s Team Kaitlyn Lawes upended No. 1 seed Team Eun-Ji Gim of South Korea 7-4 Saturday in the HearingLife Tour Challenge women’s quarterfinals.

After starting the Grand Slam of Curling tournament at 0-2, the Winnipeg native Lawes won her third consecutive game while handing Gim her first, and only, loss of the week.

Gim, who topped the round-robin table with a 4-0 record and the best shootout total, wasn’t the only previously undefeated club to fall in the women’s quarterfinals.

No. 2 seed Switzerland’s Team Silvana Tirinzoni also dropped a 7-4 decision to Canada’s Team Jennifer Jones.

Sweden’s Team Anna Hasselborg is the only one of the three clubs that carried an unblemished round-robin record into the quarterfinals that is still standing.

Hasselborg ousted Scotland’s Team Rebecca Morrison 8-5 and will play Jones, from Winnipeg, in the semifinals.

Lawes will take on fellow Canadian club Team Kerri Einarson from Gimli, Man. Einarson eliminated Italy’s Team Stefania Constantini 7-4.
