Yankees’ Judge out of starting lineup for series opener against Blue Jays

New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge will not be in the starting lineup when his team opens a three-game series in Toronto on Tuesday.

Judge, the reigning American League MVP, was absent from the list of starters posted on Twitter by the Yankees.

The 31-year-old is slashing .266/.402/.605 with 35 home runs and 71 RBIs in 102 games, a year after he set an American League record with 62 homers.

According to Rotowire, Judge made a 22nd consecutive start on Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks and has had just three days off since returning from a toe injury in late August.

On Monday, Judge told Gary Philllips of the New York Daily News that he planned on playing in the Yankees’ final week.

“I’m planning on being out there,” Judge said. “There were talks of stuff getting shut down, but I gotta be out there. I’m a leader on this team and, especially with the young guys we got coming up, you got to show them that you got to post even if you’re not feeling good, not feeling great. You gotta be out there every single day for your teammates. So, yeah, I’m gonna be out there.”

Manager Aaron Boone was not so committal, however.

“He and I will talk,” Boone said.

Watch the Blue Jays face the Yankees live on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ starting at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT.
