Giants’ Saquon Barkley ruled out vs. 49ers with ankle injury

The New York Giants will be without their top offensive weapon for Thursday night’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, as the team ruled Saquon Barkley out with an ankle injury on Wednesday.

Barkley hurt his ankle late in the fourth quarter of the Giants’ Week 2 comeback win over the Arizona Cardinals. He was tackled after a short run on the game-winning field-goal drive and had to be helped to the bench.

Head coach Brian Daboll said on Tuesday that Barkley has a sprained ankle. There was speculation the 26-year-old running back would be out up to three weeks.

But on Tuesday, Daboll, a native of Welland, Ont., said Barkley had made considerable progress, adding, “he feels a lot better.”

Starting left tackle Andrew Thomas was also ruled out for Thursday’s game with a hamstring injury he suffered in New York’s season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
