Yankees’ Trevino says he needs season-ending wrist surgery

New York Yankees catcher Jose Trevino said Friday while speaking to reporters that he needs season-ending wrist surgery.

The 30-year-old backstop was placed on the 10-day Injured List earlier in the day with a right wrist tear. Trevino said his wrist has been an issue since spring training, per MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.

A first-time All-Star in 2022, Trevino has struggled this season, posting a .210/.257/.312 slash line with four home runs in 55 games.

New York recalled catcher Ben Rortveldt to take Trevino’s spot on the roster. Rortvedlt, 25, has played games at low-A, double-A, triple-A and the major league levels in 2023.

However, seven-year MLB veteran Kyle Higashioka will likely handle the bulk of the catching duties in Trevino’s absence. He has already played in 60 games in 2023, hitting .232 with five home runs.

The Yankees start a series against the Kansas City Royals on Friday night and entered the day on a four-game losing streak and four games back of the final wild-card spot in the American League.
