Report: Diamondbacks acquire Mariners closer Paul Sewald in multi-player deal

The Arizona Diamondbacks are acquiring Seattle Mariners closer Paul Sewald in a deal just over 24 hours before MLB’s trade deadline, according to multiple reports Monday.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic was first to report the Mariners will get outfielder Dominic Canzone, infielder Josh Rojas and infield prospect Ryan Bliss in the trade.

The Mariners (54-51) entered Monday’s play 5.5 games out of first place in the American League West and 4.5 games out of a wild-card spot, while the Diamondbacks are one game out of a wild-card spot in the National League.

Sewald had two saves against the Diamondbacks over the weekend.

Sewald, 33, is 3-1 with a 2.93 ERA and a career-high 21 saves in 24 opportunities this season. He is under club control next season and can become a free agent prior to the 2025 campaign.

Canzone made his major-league debut earlier this month. The 25-year-old is hitting .237/.293/.368 with one homer and eight RBIs in 38 at-bats.

Rojas, 29, has been a depth infielder for the Diamondbacks. He is slashing .228/.292/.296 with no homers and 26 RBIs in 26 at-bats.

Bliss has split this season between double-A and triple-A.
