Boston Bruins sign veteran defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk

The Boston Bruins are adding depth to their blue line and bringing back a familiar face to local fans in the process.

Kevin Shattenkirk, who spent three years at Boston University, including one season as captain, returns to his old stomping grounds more than a decade later. The team announced the free agency acquisition on Twitter but did not release terms of the deal.

Shattenkirk, 34, spent the last three years with the Anaheim Ducks after winning the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2020. The 2007 first-rounder (by the Avalanche) spent most of his career in St. Louis before a brief stint in Washington and two seasons with the New York Rangers before heading south to Tampa.

He’s now coming off a 27-point season with the Ducks, who are rebuilding, and joins a team expecting to contend again — that is, if they can navigate their cap constraints. The Bruins went all-in at the trade deadline in the spring but were upset by the Florida Panthers.
