The 13-0 Tampa Bay Rays were dealt their first bad break of the season, as starting pitcher Jeffrey Springs is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of two months with a left arm injury, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Springs left Thursday’s game against the Red Sox with what the team called “left arm ulnar neuritis.”
The team will seek additional opinions, but Topkin is reporting that it will be a minimum of two months on the shelf with the possibility of it being longer should the injury require surgery.
Prior to the injury, Springs, like pretty much all of the Rays players, was off to a terrific start. In 16 innings pitched, he has has a 0.56 ERA and 24 strikeouts while walking just four batters.
The Rays rallied back to win against the Red Sox after Springs left the game, and tied the modern-day MLB record for the best start to a season at 13-0 in the process.
You can watch the Rays try and break the record against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sportsnet and SN NOW at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT.
