McIntosh breaks 200-metre freestyle world junior record to end Canadian swim trials

On the final day of the 2023 Canadian Swimming Trials, Summer McIntosh broke yet another record.

The 16-year-old ended her star-studded trials by lowering her own world junior and Canadian record in the 200-metre freestyle, clocking in at 1 minute, 53.91 seconds. Her previous record stood at 1:54.13.

McIntosh was short of Frederica Pellegrini’s 1:52.98 world record time.

The Canadian swimming star etched her name in swimming stardom at Toronto PanAm Sports Centre by breaking two FINA world records.

She started by taking the 400-metre freestyle world record, which was held by Australia’s Ariarne Titmus since May 2022, with a 3:58.08 performance.

McIntosh added another layer to her impressive week on Saturday when she broke Hungarian superstar Katinka Hosszu’s 400-metre individual medley record which stood since the 2016 Rio Olympics.

With her 4:25.87 performance, McIntosh became the first swimmer ever, male or female, to hold the long-course world record for both the 400-metre freestyle and IM.

McIntosh joined countrywoman Maggie Mac Neil as Canadians currently holding a world record. Mac Neil broke the 50-metre backstroke (25.25) and 100-metre butterfly (54.05) short-course records during the 2022 FINA Short Course World Championships.

McIntosh also lowered her own world junior records at the 200-metre IM (2:06.89) and 200-metre butterfly (2:04.70). She currently holds six world junior records in both long and short course.

Finally, McIntosh was also awarded the Swimmer of the Year and Junior Swimmer of the Year awards by Swimming Canada ahead of the Trials’ final day.
