Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has been suspended eight games without pay “for conduct detrimental to” the NBA, commissioner Adam Silver announced Wednesday.
Morant has been away from the Grizzlies since he live-streamed a video of himself holding a gun at a Denver nightclub on Instagram on March 4. Police in Colorado declined to press charges after an investigation into the incident but the NBA had an active investigation into the matter.
The suspension was handed down after Morant met with Silver in New York Wednesday.
“Ja’s conduct was irresponsible, reckless and potentially very dangerous,” said Silver in a statement. “It also has serious consequences given his enormous following and influence, particularly among young fans who look up to him. He has expressed sincere contrition and remorse for his behaviour. Ja has also made it clear to me that he has learned from this incident and that he understands his obligations and responsibility to the Memphis Grizzlies and the broader NBA community extend well beyond his play on the court.”
Morant has already served five of the eight games of his suspension and will be eligible to return to the lineup on March 20 against the Dallas Mavericks.
